Sanjay’s Super Team

In Sanjay’s Super Team accomplished artist Sanjay Patel uses his own experience to tell the story of a young, first-generation Indian-American boy whose love for western pop culture comes into conflict with his father’s traditions. Sanjay is absorbed in the world of cartoons and comics, while his father tries to draw him into the traditions of his Hindu practice. Tedium and reluctance quickly turn into an awe-inspiring adventure as the boy embarks on a journey he never imagined, returning with a new perspective that they can both embrace.


The deities in Sanjay’s Super Team have been brought to life for thousands of years in India through theater and dance. To capture the movements of the deities Hanuman, Durga, and Vishnu, the filmmakers studied the ancient Indian dance traditions of Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and Kathakali. These dance traditions gave the characters specific physical personalities, which helped tell the story in a unique and beautiful way.


To achieve an otherworldly feeling, director Sanjay Patel asked for the light of the enlightened world to behave differently from the rules of our “normal” world. To make the light of the realm of the deities feel alien, the filmmakers broke many rules of conventional physics, and forced light to behave outside the realm of natural convention.

Der Unterhändler

Quietschende Sessel im Zürcher Corso begleiteten gestern bei Bridge of Spies (deutscher Titel: Der Unterhändler) die klirrende (menschliche) Kälte am Checkpoint Charlie und anderen morbiden Schauplätzen des Kalten Krieges 1957 in Brooklyn und Berlin. Tom Hanks spielt den charakterstarken Pflichtverteidiger James B. Donovan, Mark Rylance den von trockenem Humor beflügelten sowjetischen Kunstmaler und Spion Rudolf Abel.

Die Bilder wirken sehr authentisch und bedrückend. Mit einem Budget von 40 Millionen US-Dollar kann man schon einiges bewirken. Die übertriebe Langatmigkeit ist vermutlich von Steven Spieberg beabsichtigt. Obwohl das Tomatometer der Topkritiker auf 98% steht, hätte ein Krimi für meinen Geschmack etwas mehr Spannung verdient. Die knapp 3 Stunden (inkl. Vorschau und Pause) fühlten sich auch so an.

In einer Szene fährt Donovan im Taxi im Westteil Berlins an einem Kino vorbei. Laut der Leuchtreklame über dem Eingang läuft u.a. die Komödie Eins, zwei, drei von Billy Wilder, die ebenfalls im geteilten Berlin im Agentenmilieu spielt und dabei die Akteure parodiert, besonders die Agenten des sowjetischen Geheimdienstes.

Twenty Sixteen

Today I switched this blog from Twenty Fifteen to Twenty Sixteen, the new default theme that ships with WordPress. I first had the same first impression as every year. I liked the old one better. But after revisiting the site a couple of times I’m already starting to like it more and more. It’s a fresh start, it’s even more light-weight and it made me realize by looking at the category cloud that I want to cut down on categories and only use those that really matter (to me). It’s important in life to focus on what’s important and the same of course also applies to blogging.

While the guests and many performers can’t make the performance, Murray puts on a show with the hotel and theaters workers, his team, and the performers that are able to attend.
