    Google’s Proposal for North Bayshore

    In this video Google vice president of real estate Dave Radcliffe and architects Thomas Heatherwick and Bjarke Ingels discuss the proposed master plan for their new campus in Mountain View, California. With this proposal, the focus is on creating space for people, nature and ideas to thrive. Pretty impressive stuff.

    Bjarke Ingels in the picture above is a Danish architect based in New York City. Hoping to become a cartoonist, he began to study architecture in 1993 as he thought it would help him to improve his drawing skills.

    Thomas Heatherwick was born in London. Since the late 1990s he has emerged as one of Britain’s most gifted and imaginative designers. His innovative approach to design has earned him a reputation as an «ideas engine», probably one of the reasons why Google selected him for the proposal.

    Scott Berkun was born and raised in Queens, New York City, studied philosophy, computer Science and design at Carnegie Mellon University, was a manager at Microsoft (1994-2003) where he led a team of over 100 developers and designers who built Internet Explorer up to version 5 when it still was the market leader.

    The Year Without Pants CoverFrom 2010 through 2012 he worked at WordPress.com and wrote The Year Without Pants which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the firm and the unique work culture that contributes to its phenomenal success. I listened to the audio book during my summer vacation in Italy and really loved it. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know how it feels to work inside or build a team of remote workers. Personally, I think it’s the future of work. Although being employed also has lots of benefits, the freedom you have when you can work from basically any place is an amazing quality of life I would never want to miss again being the founder of a remotely organized company myself.

    50 million websites, or 20 percent of the entire web, use WordPress. The force behind WordPress.com is a convention-defying company called Automattic, Inc., whose ~300 employees work from anywhere in the world they wish and launch improvements to their products dozens of times a day. With a fraction of the resources of Google, Amazon, or Facebook, they have a similar impact on the future of the Internet.

    Berkun’s story reveals insights on creativity, productivity, and leadership from the kind of workplace that might be in everyone’s future.

  • The Circle

    The Circle

    The Circle erzählt die Geschichte von Mae Holland, die beim Circle Karriere macht – ein Unternehmen, das stark einem Google der nahen Zukunft ähnelt. Wie das Vorbild «Big Brother» aus Orwells 1984 hat auch der Circle drei Mottos:

    • secrets are lies
    • sharing is caring
    • privacy is theft

    Ich habe das 2013 erschienene Buch des US-amerikanischen Schriftstellers, Drehbuchautors und Herausgebers verschiedener Literaturzeitschriften, Dave Eggers, kürzlich auf Englisch gelesen. Seit 2014 liegt es auch auf Deutsch vor.

    Im englischen Wikipedia-Eintrag wird lustigerweise der deutsche Blogger und Spiegel Online Kolumnist Sascha Lobo zitiert:

    Sascha Lobo called the book a «demonization» of internet companies that offers no actual arguments.

    Er bezieht sich in seinem Artikel dämonisierte Digitalkonzerne allerdings weniger auf das Buch selbst, sondern auf die undifferenzierte Kritik ihnen gegenüber und die unwirksame politische Regulierung, die tatsächliche Lösungen verhindert. Sein Artikel ist somit keine Buchkritik im klassischen Sinne, da er es selbst gar nicht gelesen hat (laut eigener Aussage in einem Vortrag in Radolfzell).

    Der Roman ist eine Dystopie, eine fiktionale, in der Zukunft spielende Erzählung mit negativem Ausgang, aber mit durchaus differenzierten Charakteren und zum Nachdenken anregenden Szenarien, die in naher Zukunft durchaus denkbar wären. In der Realität wird es aber wohl eher so aussehen, dass nicht ein einzelnes Unternehmen die «totale Kontrolle» übernehmen wird, sondern zahlreiche Firmen, Geheimdienste, Regierungen, Einzelpersonen, etc. um «Vorherrschaft» ringen werden. Das dezentral aufgebaute Internet zu zentralisieren und alle Daten zu kanalisieren und sinnvoll miteinander zu verbinden ist technologisch gar nicht so einfach, selbst für ein Google, Facebook oder die NSA.

    Wenn wir uns bewusst mit dem Thema Privatsphäre und Sicherheit im Internet auseinandersetzen und sensibel mit unseren Daten umgehen, machen wir es anderen deutlich schwerer, umfangreiche Profile über uns zu erstellen und von diesen Daten zu profitieren.
