The Oracle of Ottawa

I’ve been recommending podcasts on this blog every now and then and also mentioned the Tim Ferris› podcast almost 4 years ago. Last week I stumbled upon an amazing episode of The Tim Ferris Show with Shopify founder and CEO (Chief Executive Officer) Tobi Lütke.

Tim and Tobi met for the first time at a Ruby on Rails conference around 2004, when Tobi still was a Ruby on Rails core team member. Tobi also released a series of open source projects that are used around the world such as Liquid, DelayedJob, and ActiveMerchant.

In 2004 he also launched an online snowboard store based on Ruby on Rails. It quickly became obvious that the software was more valuable than the store itself, so Tobi and his founding team launched the Shopify platform in 2006. He has served as CEO since 2008 at the company’s headquarters in Ottawa, Canada.

Shopify is a proprietary ecommerce platform. Personally, I prefer open source ecommerce software like Magento and WooCommerce, but the story of Shopify is similarly amazing as the story of WordPress.

or on your favorite podcast platform. There’s also a transcript available. This episode is absolutely outstanding and highly recommended.

Book Recommendations

Tim always asks his guests for book recommendations, one of which I already ordered as a paperback, one as an audio book.

  • High Output Management by Andrew S. Grove
  • Mindset by Dr. Carol Dweck
  • The Courage to Be Disliked: How to Free Yourself, Change Your Life, and Achieve Real Happiness by Ichiro Kishimi
  • A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy by William B. Irvine
